The Japanese nuclear accident has raised both fears of the anti-nuclear crowd, and hopes engineers have for a future power source. The engineer's hopes are based on the fact that first generation technology was tested with extreme natural disaster with only localized environmental harm. Fourth generation technology would have improved the situation.
More importantly breeder reactors produce far less waste and the waste is safe after a fraction of the time that current technology requires. In addition the waste from current nuclear power plants serves as fuel for breeder reactors.
